Court Orders Payment of RM1.35 Million
KUALA LUMPUR: A High Court ruling requires Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to pay RM1.35 million to Lim Guan Eng for defamatory statements regarding Yayasan Al-Bukhary’s tax-exempt status.
Claims of Neglecting Verification
Judicial Commissioner Roz Mawar Rozain found Muhyiddin guilty of defamation, noting that he had ample resources to verify facts but did not. The statements continued even after Lim highlighted their inaccuracy, the judge observed.
Racial Undertones of Remarks
The court further determined that Muhyiddin’s remarks could incite racial sentiments. Muhyiddin’s defense was dismissed, as the statements lacked qualified privilege and were perceived as an attempt to mislead public perception.
Total Compensation Awarded
Muhyiddin must pay a total of RM1.35 million in damages, including RM50,000 for legal fees. He intends to appeal, claiming the court’s decision was unfounded.
