PETALING JAYA: Rising star Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim has brought pride to Malaysia by breaking an 18-year medal drought at the World Junior Diving Championships.
A Close Finish for the Bronze Medal
The 18-year-old earned a bronze medal in the boy’s 3m springboard final (16-18 years) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, scoring 506.75 points. China’s Yan Xin was the standout performer, winning gold with 546.60 points, while Norway’s Isak Borslien narrowly edged out Nurqayyum with 508.35 points for silver.
Yong Rui Jie’s Top-10 Finish
Malaysia’s Yong Rui Jie finished 10th in the same event, scoring 440.30 points.
4. A Strong Start in Preliminaries
Nurqayyum had already shown promise in the preliminaries, where he placed second with 479.30 points, just behind Yan Xin’s impressive 524.85.
A Momentous Return to the Podium
This bronze medal is Malaysia’s first in 18 years, following Bryan Nickson Lomas’s podium finish in 2006 and his gold medal performance in 2004.
