Authorities Probe Era FM DJs Over Allegations of Religious Insult

KUALA LUMPUR: The Authorities have begun investigating a controversial video featuring Era FM DJs, which allegedly ridiculed a religious practice.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that six police reports have been filed concerning the video.

Video Removed After Gaining Significant Attention

“Our inquiry established that the video has been removed. Before deletion, it had accumulated 95,400 views and was shared by 204 users,” he disclosed on Tuesday (March 4).

Legal Actions and Consequences

The case is being pursued under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

If convicted under Section 298, the accused may face up to one year in prison, a fine, or both. Under Section 233 of the CMA, the penalties include a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, along with an additional RM1,000 fine for each day the offense persists after conviction.

Community Reactions and Official Response Authorities

“A 44-year-old engineer was among those who lodged reports after encountering the video on Facebook, which allegedly featured radio station personnel mocking Hindu religious practices,” Razarudin explained.

He added that the DJs involved have issued an apology via the Era FM Facebook page.
