Disturbing Figures: 2240 Child Abuse Cases Recorded in 2024

Introduction

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community reported that the Social Welfare Department documented 2,240 cases of child abuse as of August 2024. This number marks a significant decrease from the 4,469 cases recorded in 2023.

Classification of Abuse Cases

The recorded abuse cases are categorized into physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Girls are affected by abuse at a higher rate than boys, particularly in sexual and emotional abuse, while boys are more frequently subjected to physical abuse.

Sexual Abuse Statistics Show Gender Inequality

The gender difference in sexual abuse cases is stark. In 2023, 2,328 sexual abuse cases were reported against girls, compared to only 195 cases involving boys. By mid-2024, there were 1,149 cases against girls and 111 cases against boys.

Police Reports on Child Sexual Crimes

In addition, the police reported 5,401 sexual crimes against children in 2023. Moreover, from January to April 2024, authorities documented 2,059 cases.

Government Actions to Address Abuse

Minister Nancy Shukri emphasized that the government takes a strong stance on child protection. Laws such as the Child Act 2001 and the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, along with amendments made to the Child Act in 2016, have intensified punishments for abusers.

Collaboration Needed for Effective Change

Nancy called for the involvement of all sectors, including individuals, NGOs, and businesses, to work together in the fight against child abuse, urging a joint effort to safeguard children in Malaysia.
