Ex-Fast Food Worker Jailed for Car Theft, Attempted Murder

Sentencing and Court Decision

A former fast food worker, Muhammad Wan Azhar Azman, was sentenced to 10 years in prison today after being found guilty of stealing a Honda Civic and attempting to murder the vehicle’s co-owner in Putrajaya last October.

The 20-year-old was convicted by Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi for recklessly driving the stolen car, endangering the life of Mohamed Jalil Iskandar, 28, who clung to the vehicle’s bonnet and was later flung off and seriously injured.

Sentence for Attempted Murder and Theft

The judge handed down a 10-year sentence for attempted murder and an additional 4-year sentence for theft, both to be served concurrently. In his ruling, Judge Sanusi took into account the social report, Wan Azhar’s request for leniency, and the seriousness of the crime.

“The victim was severely injured and had to stay in the ICU for five days. If he had died, you would have been facing a murder charge,” said the judge.

Wan Azhar, who was unrepresented in court, pleaded for a reduced sentence, saying, “I am still young and have plans for my future.”

Prosecutor’s Call for Maximum Sentence

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin argued for a maximum 20-year sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the lasting impact on the victim. Jalil suffered head, facial, and body injuries and continues to receive long-term treatment.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred on October 22, when the car owner, Joshua Jeyaseelan David, 30, rented the vehicle to Wan Azhar’s girlfriend. After she failed to return the car, Joshua used a GPS tracker to find it in Putrajaya, where it was being driven by Wan Azhar.

Jalil attempted to stop the car, which had a different number plate, but Wan Azhar refused and attempted to ram Jalil, who clung to the bonnet for several kilometers before being thrown off.

Wan Azhar was arrested on October 25 and later led authorities to the car, which was found at a public housing unit in Presint 5.
