Govt Considers Cloud Seeding for 137ha Kuantan Peatland Fire

Kuantan Government Explores Additional Measures to Tackle the Blaze

KUANTAN: The Malaysian government is evaluating whether cloud seeding could help control the ongoing peatland fire at a coconut plantation in Kuantan, which has been burning for nearly two weeks.

Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad cautioned that cloud seeding is not an immediate solution and requires expert consultation, proper weather conditions, and significant financial resources.

Firefighters Continue Struggle Against Spreading Fire

Since February 22, the fire has destroyed approximately 137 hectares of coconut plantations. Despite extensive suppression efforts, it remains active due to dry conditions and strong winds.

The Fire and Rescue Department is currently using helicopter-assisted water bombing, firebreaks, and flooding to contain the blaze.

Long-Term Strategies for Peatland Fire Prevention

Nik Nazmi emphasized the need for better fire prevention strategies, urging for additional RMK-13 funding to enhance peatland firefighting infrastructure.
