Review of Proposal for Senior Citizens’ Licence Renewal
SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport is planning to review a proposal that would require individuals aged 65 and above to undergo health and competency assessments prior to renewing their driving licences.
Minister Anthony Loke commented on the matter, stating that while the suggestion is under consideration, a thorough evaluation will be conducted before any official decisions are made.
“We will look into the report and will not rush to impose any new conditions,” Loke said, addressing the media after leading the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).
Increased Road Accidents and Senior Drivers’ Competency
Loke responded to questions about whether requiring elderly drivers to pass health and competency assessments before renewing their licences would be beneficial.
Earlier reports pointed out the increasing number of road accidents involving elderly drivers, suggesting that stricter regulations for licence renewal could help address this issue.
One recommendation is to require drivers aged 65 and older to undergo competency and health evaluations, given that there is currently no age limit for driving in Malaysia.
Logistics Hub Development in Negeri Sembilan
In a separate announcement, Loke also confirmed that a site in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, will be chosen for the establishment of the country’s logistics hub.
“The state government of Negeri Sembilan has expressed full support and is in the process of finding suitable land,” he said.
Additionally, Loke revealed that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority has introduced tax incentives of up to 70% to encourage investment in the Smart Logistics Complex, as part of Budget 2025. – Bernama
