New Friday Break Policy Unveiled
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor’s workforce will enjoy a two-hour Friday break starting January 2025, as announced by Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the Johor Budget 2025 presentation.
Alignment with Weekend Transition
This policy accompanies Johor’s shift from a Friday-Saturday to a Saturday-Sunday weekend schedule. The change aims to ensure that Muslim employees have ample time for Friday prayers.
Adjustments for Public and Private Sectors
The Johor Mentri Besar clarified that government agencies will align with federal schedules, while private employers must extend Friday breaks from 1.5 hours to 2 hours.
Schools to Facilitate Friday Prayers
Onn Hafiz also emphasized the role of schools in facilitating religious obligations. Surau and hall facilities will be made available for male Muslim students, with oversight from religious and educational authorities.
Balancing Religion, Economy, and Family Life
The weekend shift is expected to boost Johor’s economy while providing families with more quality time and supporting religious practices.
Decree Ends Friday-Saturday Weekends
This change concludes an 11-year tradition of Friday-Saturday weekends in Johor, following an official decree by Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
